Banten Supports Giant Sea Wall Project to Prevent Coastal Erosion
Government and Experts Collaborate to Build 700 km Barrier

SERANG, FOKUS.CO.ID – The Banten Provincial Government welcomes the plan to build a Giant Sea Wall, a massive coastal barrier initiated by the Central Government. This project has gained direct attention from President Prabowo Subianto. The sea wall will stretch 700 kilometers, from Banten to Gresik, East Java.

A Long-Delayed Project

Mahdani, Head of the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) Banten, stated that this project has been under discussion since 1994 during the New Order era. However, it is only now being reconsidered. “We need this project because many beaches in Banten are experiencing coastal erosion,” said Mahdani. He emphasized that rising sea levels are threatening Banten’s coastline.

A Major National Initiative

The Giant Sea Wall is expected to be a large-scale national project. The Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development will oversee its implementation. The funding will come from the State Budget (APBN).

“This will likely be a national project, and Banten will be part of the affected area,” Mahdani added. He also mentioned that Banten’s Provincial Government might be involved in the construction process, as they have authority over maritime areas up to 12 nautical miles under Law No. 23 of 2014. “We will discuss with the Governor whether this project should be included in our Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD),” he explained.

Thorough Studies Before Implementation

Coordinating Minister Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) assured that the project would not be rushed. It requires extensive research. “We will carefully study all aspects and identify potential investors,” he stated.

He also highlighted the massive budget required for this project. While there is no exact timeline for the start of construction, scientific research will involve experts. “Our goal is to build a strong and sustainable infrastructure. This is about public safety and future generations,” AHY concluded.
